How a House Becomes a Home

私たちはこれまで、2人合わせて12軒の異なる家で暮らしてきました。この10年間、国内外を問わずさまざまな場所を転々としながら、家が家になっていくこと、そして家が家でなくなっていくことを、それぞれ6回ずつ経験してきたことになります。そんな経験を重ねると、ふと「家は一体、どのようにして家になっていくのだろう」と考えることがあります。物質としての居住空間が、少しずつ心の安らぐ場所になっていく。その間には、家具や道具、光や匂い、そこで過ごす時間、そしてそこに暮らす人の営み。何か特別なエッセンスがあるのではないかと思うわけです。
Between the two of us, we have lived in twelve different houses. Over the past ten years, moving from place to place both in Japan and abroad, we have each experienced the process of a house becoming a home—and eventually ceasing to be one—six times. After so many moves, we sometimes find ourselves wondering: what is it that makes a house a home? A physical space gradually becomes somewhere that feels comforting and familiar. Perhaps there is some kind of essence to that transformation—something found in the objects we surround ourselves with, the light and smells of a place, the time we spend there, and the small, everyday acts of living.
2026年2月、私たちはこの森の家に2人で引っ越してきました。
ここはもともと、商社に勤めながら世界各地を転々としていた私の祖父母が、退職後の暮らしのため30年ほど前に建てた家です。長い間空き家になっていたこともあり、年月の重なりは至る所に感じられますが。それでも、大胆に設けられた窓からは森の景色が広がり、光の入り方や季節の移ろいを家の中にいながら感じることができます。
私たちは、この家をRound and Roundの最初の拠点として、少しずつ育てていきたいと思っています。もともと誰かが暮らしていた家を、生まれ育った環境もこれまでの暮らしも異なる2人が、どのように「家」にしていくのか。その過程を、長い時間をかけて記録していけたらと思っています。
In February 2026, we moved into this house in the woods together.
The house was originally built around thirty years ago by my grandparents, who had worked for a trading company and spent much of their lives moving from place to place around the world. They built it as a place to live after retirement. The house had been empty for a long time, and the passing of the years can be felt throughout it. Yet its generously sized windows open the house up to the forest, allowing us to experience the changing light, the landscape, and the seasons from within. We hope to gradually nurture this house as the first home and base of Round and Round. How do two people, raised in completely different environments and with very different experiences of living, turn a house that once belonged to someone else into their own home? We would like to document that process over a long period of time.
引っ越してきて最初の朝。
カーテンを開けると、窓の向こうには一面の雪景色が広がっていました。この日から私たちは、薪ストーブに火を入れて暖をとりながら、少しずつこの家での暮らしを始めます。まずは、居住空間を整えるところから。朝から晩まで、家中の掃除や家具の配置替えを行いました。
On our first morning here, we opened the curtains to find the forest covered in snow. From that day on, we began our life here by lighting the wood-burning stove for warmth and setting about making the house livable. We spent our days cleaning, from morning until night, slowly working our way through every corner of the house.
まだ車の運転もままなりませんでしたが、市営のリサイクルセンターへは計6往復ほど。
私が幼い頃、お絵描きや宿題をしていた長い机を取り払い、Round and Roundのオフィスが完成。少しずつ家ができていくのを感じる毎日でした。
I was still getting the hang of driving, but we made around six trips to the municipal recycling centre. We removed the long desk where I used to draw and do my homework as a child, and turned the space into the Round and Round office. Day by day, little by little, we could feel the house beginning to take shape
